01What is Open Design and how does it work?
Open Design is a free, open source tool that turns a simple prompt into a real prototype like a landing page, slide deck, or dashboard. It runs on your own laptop and uses an AI coding tool you already have—like Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex—as its engine. You type what you want, pick a style, and watch the design build in front of you.
Unlike Claude Design, which is locked behind a paid Anthropic plan, Open Design costs zero extra if you already pay for an AI coding tool. It was released on April 28th, just 11 days after Claude Design launched, by a small team called Nexubio. It ships with 19 skills and 71 brand-grade design systems, so your prototypes look like they were made by a professional design team.
02Top features that make Open Design stand out
- 19 skills cover web prototypes, SaaS landing pages, dashboards, mobile apps, magazine pitch decks, pricing pages, blog posts, docs, Kanban boards, OKR scorecards, and more.
- 71 brand design systems—pick from Linear, Stripe, Vercel, Notion, Apple, Tesla, Airbnb, Shopify, and Spotify to get a look that matches the real brand.
- Discovery form asks you about surface, audience, tone, brand context, and scale before the AI starts—so the brief is locked in 30 seconds.
- Direction picker offers five visual directions: modern minimal, tech utility, brutalist, soft warm, and editorial.
- Live progress view shows tasks like setting up layout or writing hero copy streaming in real time—you can stop it mid-flight if it goes wrong.
- Sandboxed preview renders every design in a clean iframe, and you can edit single elements with quick instructions.
- Real exports—save as HTML, PDF, PPTX, zip, or Markdown.
03How to install Open Design in three steps
Installing Open Design is dead simple and takes about 90 minutes for a developer. You only need a laptop with Node.js and an AI coding tool like Claude Code or Codex installed.
- Clone the GitHub repo from the Open Design project.
- Run pnpm install to install all dependencies.
- Run pnpm tools dev run web to start the local server.
Your browser will open automatically. You’ll see a chat box on the left and a live preview on the right. From there, pick a skill, pick a design system, type your prompt, and hit send.
The AI starts streaming and builds the design in front of you.
04How to use Open Design for your projects
Using Open Design is like having a design team on demand. Start by choosing a skill—for example, build a pricing page or a pitch deck. Then pick a design system that matches your brand or your client’s brand.
Type what you want in plain English, like “Make a modern pricing page with three tiers.”
Watch the progress list as tasks go from “in progress” to “done.” If you see something wrong, stop it and redirect. You can also click an element in the preview and type a quick instruction, like “Make the button green,” and the AI patches just that part. When you’re happy, export the file.
You can get an HTML file ready to upload, a PDF for sharing, a PPTX for slides, or a zip with all assets.
05Open Design vs Claude Design: what the comparison shows
Claude Design runs on Anthropic servers and gives you deeper Canva integration, team sharing, inline comments, and a polished hosted experience. But you must pay for Claude Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise to use it. Open Design runs on your laptop, costs zero extra if you already have an AI coding tool, and offers most of the core features.
Open Design also adds an anti-slop checklist. It checks typography, spacing, color contrast, and hierarchy, and runs a five-dimensional self-critique before the design ships. This means fewer generic rounded corners and gradient backgrounds.
In the episode, Julian showed that the design systems are real—like a Linear-style dashboard that looks like actual Linear, or a Stripe pricing page that matches Stripe’s own page.
06Tips, limits, and mistakes to avoid
- Expect rough edges—Open Design is early. The team says so on the GitHub front page. Component-level UI gets daily updates.
- Don’t waste tokens—watch the live progress and stop the AI if it goes the wrong way. This saves time and money.
- Use a strong AI model—Open Design works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Open Code, Quent, and GitHub Copilot CLI. The better the model, the better the output.
- Don’t skip the discovery form—it takes 30 seconds and locks your brief, so you avoid back-and-forth.
- Remember it’s not a full design tool—for complex, high-stakes projects, you may still need a human designer for the final polish.
07Who should use Open Design and why it matters
Open Design is for small business owners, freelancers, and anyone who needs quick prototypes without hiring a designer for every small task. You don’t need to learn Figma or pay for Canva Pro plus a designer. You type a prompt and get a file.
For freelancers, it’s an unfair advantage—you can deliver client work in a quarter of the time and take on more projects. Pasquale Pilateri, an Italian developer who covers this stuff, said Open Design is worth 90 minutes of setup for any developer who builds prototypes weekly. That’s the bar: one-time setup, then hours saved every week.
08The bigger picture of Open Design and AI tools
Open Design shows a new pattern: every closed AI product gets cloned by the community in under two weeks. We saw it with Open Claw and Hermes Agent. Now it’s Claude Design.
The design tool market just got commoditized.
The bar for what counts as a design tool is no longer a hosted app you pay for monthly. It’s a folder of skills and design systems that runs on whatever AI tool you already have. If you already pay for Claude Code or Cursor, your design tool budget just dropped to zero.
The edge belongs to people who learn these tools now, before everyone else catches on.
