New Codex AI agent updates are insane. New Codex AI agent updates are honestly insane and I want to show you exactly what just changed. Here's the big one. From your phone, Codex can now use the apps on your Mac.
Even when your Mac is locked. Even when the screen is off and dark. Let me say that in plain words. You can be away from your computer.
Your Mac is shut and sleeping on your desk. And you can pull out your phone, send a task, and Codex will go wake up your apps and do the work for you. It's dropped on May 21st. OpenAI calls it locked use.
And the post showing it off got over 1.8 million views in a day. So why does this matter? Let me walk you through it. For a long time, AI agents had one big annoying problem.
It needed your computer to be wide awake. Unlocked. Screen on. So if you started a long task and walked away, your Mac would fall asleep.
And the AI would just stop right in the middle. People tried all kinds of weird tricks to get around this. Some folks used little fake plugs that tricked the Mac into thinking a screen was still attached. Some ran special apps to keep the computer awake.
It was messy. It was annoying. And honestly, most normal people would never do that. Now you don't have to.
The Mac can be locked. The screen can be off. And Codex keeps going. Think about what that frees up.
You start a task before you leave the house. You lock your Mac like you always do. You go run errands. And the whole time the work is getting done.
You check your phone at the coffee shop and it's halfway finished. So how does it actually work? Let me keep this simple. There's a little plug-in you turn on.
It's called Computer Use. You go into Codex into Settings and switch it on. Asks for two permissions. One to see your screen.
One to control your apps. You say yes once and you're set. After that, Codex can do the stuff that's hard to do with just text commands. Can click buttons.
Can type. Can move through menus. It can copy and paste. It can open an app and run through it step by step, just like a person tapping around would.
And here's the part I really like. It built this with safety in mind. When Codex unlocks your Mac to do a task, it only unlocks it for a short window. Not forever.
Just long enough to do the job. And while it's working, it blocks anyone standing nearby from actually using your computer. The screen stays protected. Walking past can peek and start clicking around.
Even better. If the Mac senses someone touching the keyboard or moving the mouse, it locks itself right back up. It stops. And it waits for you to unlock it yourself.
So a stranger can't just grab your computer mid-task. That's smart. Because the first thing most people think when they hear my Mac runs while it's locked is wait, is that safe? And the answer they built in is yes, with real guardrails.
Now let me show you a simple way you'd actually use this. Say you're out for the day and you want a fresh batch of welcome messages written up for new people joining the AI Profit boardroom. You text a task from your phone. Codex wakes up the apps on your locked Mac and gets them drafted while you're out grabbing lunch.
That's it. That's the magic. Work moves while you're not even near your desk. Before I go on, quick thing.
If you're watching this and thinking, okay, this is cool, but how do I actually set it up and use it in my own business? That's exactly what we do inside the AI Profit boardroom. We've got coaching calls four times a week where we go deep on tools like Codex. How to turn it on.
How to send tasks from your phone. How to point it at the boring jobs you keep putting off so it handles them while you sleep. And we've got daily step-by-step tutorials walking you through it, plus a 30-day plan to get it working for you fast. It's in the description or just go to aiprofitboardroom.com.
Okay, back to it. Because the locked Mac thing wasn't the only update. They shipped a few at once. OpenAI folks call it Codex Thursday and two more things landed that you should know about.
The second one is called App Shots. And this one is so simple it's almost funny. You know how annoying it is to explain something to an AI? You're looking at a window on your screen.
Maybe it's a messy email. Maybe it's a list. And to get the AI to help, you'd normally have to copy it, paste it, and then describe what you're looking at. Type, type, type.
Slow. With App Shots, you just press both command keys at once. Tap, tap. And boom, the whole window gets sent straight to Codex.
Not just a picture of it either. It grabs the text too. Even the text you can't see because it's scrolled off the screen. So now Codex sees exactly what you're looking at.
No copying. No pasting. No long explanation. Here's how you'd use it.
Say you've got a long thread of questions from people in the AI Profit Boardroom open on your screen. You hit both command keys and Codex pulls the whole thing in and helps you write clear answers back fast. One tap. Done.
That little thing saves you a ton of time over a day. Now the third update. And this might be the biggest one of all for getting real work done. It's called Goal Mode.
And it used to be an experiment. A kind of test feature. But now it's official. It's stable.
It's ready for real everyday use. I have in the app, in the coding tools, all of it. So what is Goal Mode? Simple.
Instead of giving Codex one small instruction and waiting around, you give it a whole goal. Finish line. And then it just goes. Plans the steps.
Does the work. It checks its own work. And if something's not right, it fixes it. Then it does it again.
And again. Keeps going until the goal is actually done. And this isn't a five minute thing. Goal Mode can run for hours.
Sometimes across an entire night. You set the goal before bed and you wake up to finish work. Let me put real timing on this so it lands. Year ago, an AI agent like this would run for maybe half an hour before it lost the plot and stopped.
Now we're talking hours. Days even. That's a huge jump in a short time. Here's the honest part.
Thing that makes or breaks Goal Mode is the goal you give it. If you give it a fuzzy, lazy goal, it'll run for an hour and do the wrong stuff. It'll burn all that time on things you didn't want. People who use this a lot will tell you the same thing.
You have to be clear. You have to spell out what done looks like. What you want at the end. What the rules are.
The clearer you are, the better the work comes back. So how would you actually use Goal Mode? Here's one. You give it the goal of building out a full set of help docs for the AI profit boardroom.
Every common question answered clearly in one place. You set it running, you go to sleep, and by morning it's done the whole thing. That's a job that would eat up your entire week. Now it happens overnight while you rest.
Now step back and look at all three of these together. Because that's where it gets interesting. You've got Locked Use. So your Mac keeps working when it's shut and you're away.
You've got App Shots. So feeding Codex what it needs takes one tap instead of five minutes. And you've got Goal Mode. So you can hand off a whole big job and walk away.
Put those together and here's what your day starts to look like. You set a goal at night. You lock your Mac and go to bed. From your phone in the morning, you check in, send a small fix using a one-tap app shot, and it keeps rolling.
The work happens while you live your life. That's the shift. Computer used to need you sitting in front of it, awake, clicking. Now it does the clicking.
You just point it in the right direction. And I want to be straight with you here because I don't like hype. Not everything is perfect. Some people online raised fair worries about giving an AI this much control over their computer even when it's locked.
That's a reasonable thing to think about. The safety guardrails I mentioned are there for exactly that reason. And they're solid. But you should always know what you're turning on and why.
Go in with your eyes open. There's also one limit worth knowing. The locked Mac feature works when the screen is off, but the computer's still running. If you close your MacBook lid all the way, that's a different, deeper kind of sleep, and it won't run then.
So leave it open, screen off, and you're good. Telling you the real stuff because I'd rather you actually understand this than just feel excited and confused. Here's the bigger picture and then I'll let you go. This is the direction everything's heading.
AI that doesn't need babysitting. You can hand a goal and trust to run with it. AI that works around your schedule instead of you working around its limits. And the people who learn to use this now while it's fresh are going to be miles ahead of the people who wait.
Not because they're smarter. Just because they started early. They got their hands on it. They figured out what works.
You can be one of those people. This stuff is not as hard as it looks. You don't need to be a coder. You just need someone to show you the steps.
That's the Codex update. Locked use, app shots, and goal mode. Your Mac working while you sleep, one tap context, and full goals you can hand off and walk away from. Go turn it on.
