What a Free AI Agent Is and How It Works

A free AI agent is a program that can do tasks for you automatically, and you don't pay for it. In this episode, Julian Goldie shows you how to get one using Claude Code and Ollama.

Claude Code is a tool that can talk to a model running on your own computer. Ollama is the free brain that runs offline. So you get a capable AI agent with no bill. The trick is pointing Claude Code at the local model, which takes just one line of settings.

But a bare command window is not useful. That's why Agent OS exists. It wraps that free brain in a clean dashboard where you chat, click, and manage tasks like using a real app.

Agent OS Turns a Free Brain into a Real Workspace

Agent OS is the main tool shown in the episode. It makes the free AI agent useful. Instead of typing commands in a black window, you get a clean app.

  • Chat – one clean window like texting, with a side list of past conversations.
  • Agent faces – each agent has its own icon, like Claude, OpenClaw, and Hermes, so you know who you're talking to.
  • Memory – it remembers your style and preferences, so it gets better with use.
  • Kanban board – drag cards across columns and agents move them for you.
  • Goal mode – give a big goal, and the agent breaks it into steps.
  • Talk mode – speak your commands instead of typing.
  • Email – read and write email from inside the app.
  • Jarvis mode – the agent controls your computer, clicking and opening apps.
  • Studio – a space to build projects like a simple web page.
  • Connections – plug into other tools you already use.

How to Get Started with a Free AI Agent

Here is how to get the free AI agent up and running, based on what Julian showed.

  1. Install Ollama on your computer. It runs the free model locally.
  2. Install Claude Code. This is the tool that talks to the model.
  3. Change two settings so Claude Code points to the local model instead of the paid cloud version.
  4. Run it offline. Now you have a free brain on your laptop with no bill.
  5. Install Agent OS on top. The zip file includes everything you need.
  6. Open Agent OS and start using the chat, board, or other features.

Julian points out that the bare window is not a tool. Agent OS is what makes it useful. The messy setup is already wired in the zip file.

How to Use Your Free AI Agent in Daily Work

Julian shows several real examples of using Agent OS in a normal day.

In the chat, you say: "Write three short posts telling people why they should join the AI Profit Boardroom." It writes them right there. The next day, you say: "write three more posts like yesterday's." It remembers what you liked.

On the Kanban board, you make three cards: a welcome email, five social posts, and a checklist for new members. You put them in the to-do column. Agents pick up the cards and move them to done by themselves.

In goal mode, you say: "help me get more people to join the AI Profit Boardroom this week." It plans the posts, drafts the email, and builds the checklist on its own.

In talk mode, you speak: "plan a simple onboarding sequence for new AI Profit Boardroom members." It listens and writes the whole plan. You don't touch the keyboard.

For email, you say: "draft a friendly reply to this member who asked how to get started." It reads the email and writes a reply.

Finally, Jarvis mode lets the agent open your notes, grab ideas, and turn them into a welcome guide by actually clicking around your computer.

Results and Tests: What You Can Expect

Julian shares what he saw using the free AI agent with Ollama and Agent OS.

He says the first answer can take a few seconds while the brain wakes up. But once it's warm, it moves fast. The free models are much better than they were a year ago. They are close to the paid ones for everyday tasks, though not equal on the hardest problems.

He also says most of your daily jobs run fine. The slowdown people report is usually a setup problem, not a tool problem. A memory setting fixes it, and Agent OS walks you through it.

With the Kanban board, agents complete multiple tasks at once. A coffee break is enough time for a stack of work to be done. With scheduled tasks, the Monday update is already drafted when you wake up.

Tips, Limits, and Mistakes to Avoid

Julian addresses two common worries and shares tips.

First, many people say "I'm not a coder." But Agent OS hides the hard part. You click buttons, drag cards, and talk. You don't need to understand the engine to drive the car.

Second, people worry free models are slow. The first answer can take a few seconds, but then it runs fine. The memory setting fixes most speed issues.

  • Don't skip the setup – that is where people fall behind. Install and start using it.
  • Stay in control with Jarvis mode – you can stop it anytime. It's a helper, not a runaway robot.
  • Use the memory feature – the agent learns your style and gets better.
  • Connect other tools – but don't trap your agents in one box.

Julian warns that watching a video and saying "someday" never works. The people who actually install and drop tasks on the board pull ahead every week.

Who Should Use a Free AI Agent and Why It Matters

This free AI agent is for anyone who wants to automate busywork without paying monthly fees. You can run it on your own laptop, offline, with no limits.

A year ago, running a real agent meant paying, waiting, and sending your work to a server you don't control. Now you can have a capable agent on your own machine and wrap it in a clean app that feels like a real team.

Julian says this matters because most people still don't know it's possible. While others pay and hit walls, you can have a dashboard full of agents doing your busy work. The difference isn't brains – it's having the tool ready and someone to show you the steps.

He gives a final example: on Friday, you drop in one card that says "Plan next week's content." By the time you're back, the agents have laid out the whole week. You just review it.
